Somatic Therapy for Women - Healing That Starts in the Body

Some things can't be thought through. They're felt in the body: the tight chest, the restless nights, the overwhelm that arrives out of nowhere. I'm Claire Buttrum, a somatic therapist and therapeutic coach based in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. I work with women navigating anxiety, overwhelm, neurodivergence, perimenopause, and loss in its many forms, using gentle, body-based approaches to help you feel steadier and more at home in yourself.

My work draws on somatic therapy, breathwork, hypnotherapy, yoga, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, parts work, and nervous system regulation. I specialise in working with women and neurodivergent adults. Find out more on my services page.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

You are not alone if you feel confused and unsure of where your life is going, or if your relationships feel unsatisfying or full of bickering.

It's okay to feel good one day and rubbish the next. Or to think you've got it all sorted, only for that certainty to fall away and leave you empty and sad.

You are not bad, wrong or at fault if you find yourself talking negatively to yourself. Words like: "I'm rubbish", "I'm an awful parent", "I should be over this by now", "I don't recognise my life anymore", "I can't do anything right".

These stories can leave us feeling lonely, and like nobody understands us or what we're carrying. Somatic healing and therapeutic coaching can make a real difference to how you see yourself.

“Claire is absolutely fantastic and I can’t recommend her enough. She brings a warm and trusting energy.”
— Sinead, client

How It Works

We start with a short free consultation to see if we're a good match and answer your questions. If we are, we book your first session, where we talk about what's bringing you here and what you'd like to get out of our work together.

You can have weekly or fortnightly sessions online. I blend therapeutic coaching with gentle somatic techniques such as breathwork, hypnotherapy, EFT, expressive art, yoga and movement, parts work and ACT, and nervous system regulation, to help you understand and reconnect your body and mind. I am a qualified trauma informed coach.

My approach is trauma-informed. That means it's paced, choice-led and gentle, and you're always in charge of how deep we go.

Some women work with me for a few sessions, others for longer. Because I specialise in neurodivergence, I keep my practice as inclusive and flexible as possible. Compassion and curiosity are at the heart of our work together.

Find out more about my services and pricing, or see my FAQs.

Please note: I don't offer specialist trauma therapy such as EMDR, or support women who are in an active phase of a diagnosis such as Bipolar or personality disorder.

Grief and Loss

Grief isn't only about bereavement. It can follow the end of a relationship, a changing body, a late diagnosis, children leaving home, or a chapter of life quietly closing.

Grief lives in the body too: in the exhaustion, the heaviness, the waves that catch you off guard. I'm currently deepening my training in grief work, and I offer gentle support using breathwork, hypnotherapy and nervous system regulation to help you carry loss in a way that feels more bearable.

We go at your pace, and only as deep as feels right for you.

I can help you…

  • Regulate your nervous system so you feel calmer and better able to cope with life's ups and downs

  • Celebrate your differences and find happiness in your neurodivergence

  • Learn the love language of your neurodivergence

  • Navigate perimenopause and menopause with more ease and self-understanding

  • Cope better with chronic or cyclical anxiety, especially when linked to hormonal changes

  • Find steadiness and comfort after loss or difficult life changes

  • Create distance from anxious thoughts that weigh you down or keep you stuck

  • Speak more kindly to yourself when shame or low self-worth show up

  • Restore your sense of self and build a stronger connection to who you really are

  • Build warm, heart-centred relationships with your children, partner or parents

  • Live a life that leans more towards joy

Is this the right fit for you?

I work best with women who feel overwhelmed, anxious or disconnected, particularly around neurodivergence, sensitivity, perimenopause and life changes, and who want gentle, body-based tools to feel steadier day to day.

My practice isn't the right setting for complex or developmental trauma, PTSD, dissociation, eating disorders, or current self-harm or thoughts of suicide. You deserve someone with specialist training in these areas. I'd gently encourage you to look for a trauma specialist through the BACP or UKCP directories, or the EMDR Association UK. Your GP, or NHS Talking Therapies (which you can self-refer to), are also good places to start.

If your loss was sudden, violent or traumatic, or your grief has felt stuck and overwhelming for a long time, a specialist bereavement or trauma therapist may be a better fit. Cruse Bereavement Support or your GP can help you find the right support.

If you're struggling right now, please call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, or contact Samaritans any time on 116 123.

My practice is busy and spaces are limited. If your preferred time isn't available, you're welcome to join my waiting list. I'm not taking on male clients at this time.

If this feels like the right fit, free consultations are open to book below.

Or, if you'd like to start gently on your own, my low-demand Soft Landing Programme offers calming somatic practices for nervous system regulation. It's £19 for lifetime access, and you can begin straight away.
